Efficacy of Substance Abuse Prevention Programs on Knowledge , Attitudes and Skills of Newly Accepted Students to the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in the School Year of 1390-1391.

Substance abuse and its complications is one of social hazards of the present time. In recent years not only adults, but also students of schools and universities are in danger because of their age and social state and providing them with appropriate information and life skills would change their attitudes and decrease their tendency towards substance abuse. Even though the substance abuse prevention programs has been performed for university students since before, the long term efficacy of these programs are left unknown. This research is set up to assess the efficacy of these prevention programs in knowledge, attitudes and skills of university students in a 3 months period. The newly accepted students to the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in the school years of 1390-1391 can participate in this research after completing the workshop courses programmed for them.As it is not possible for all students to participate in this research, at least 386 students are chosen by using Cochrane sampling formula and they are going to take part in our seminars and workshops. Knowledge and attitudes of 386 students who complete the course is going to be evaluated by tests of "attitude evaluation”, “knowledge evaluation “and "social skills"(designed by Students' Central Consultation Department and Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Office of Health and Medical Education Ministry of Islamic Republic of Iran), before, immediately after and 3 months after the seminars has finished. After confirming normal distribution of scores by Smirnov-Kolmogrov test, the study and analysis of research data is going to be done.
