Protocol summary

Study aim
To compare the effect of massed vs. distributed lower body strength training on whole body function in elderly women
Design
Clinical trial with a control group, with parallel groups, single-blind, block randomization, on 45 participants.
Settings and conduct
This is a Quasi-experimental study with a pertest-posttest design. Upper and lower body strength tests via digital dynamo-meter, body composition via Akren BIA101 BIVA, gait performance via optogate device and blood pressure and resting heart rate via digital sphygmomanometer will be measured in the laboratory of Bojnourd University. Several functional tests will be used to determine the function movement performance of the participants. Single-blinding will be achieved in such a way that no information will be provided to the participants on which training group they will be placed in.
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Having no regular training over the past six months, healthy women 55 years old and / or older; Exclusion criteria: Having joint and physiological problems, having a history of falling.
Intervention groups
45 healthy, but inactive elderly women will be divided into three groups: Distributed training group (15 people) who will train five times a week, massed training group (15 people) who will train three times a week, the training includes a strength training program, and the control group (15 people) who will not do any exercise training.
Main outcome variables
Upper and lower body muscle strength, functional whole body

Randomization (investigator's opinion)
Randomized
Randomization description
Three groups of female participants will be randomly recruited to participate in this study. The block randomization method will be used to create a random sequence to assign participants randomly in one of the three groups. In this method, blocks of 6 all possible combinations (8 modes) are created, then these blocks are numbered and randomly selected and placed one after the other, and thus, participants will be assigned into two groups A and B ( as intervention), and group C (as control).
Blinding (investigator's opinion)
Single blinded
Blinding description
In order for single blinding, some general information about how to perform the training and testing methods will be given to all the participants. However no information will be provided to the participants on which training group they will be placed in.

Intervention groups

1

Description
Intervention group 1: Consisting of 15 participants who will be training using a distributed strength program, including 5 sessions per week and each session will be 45-60 minutes of training. The principle of overload will be considered for all the 12 weeks of training. This program consists of three parts: warm-up for lower limbs (part I), 10-minute of general stretching movements. Strength training of lower limbs (part II), The program in the first month of training will be based on the individual's weight, the second month with low resistance stretch bands, the third month with medium and high resistance stretch bands. A cool down (part III), consisting of 10 minutes walking, standing and sitting stretching movements will finally be completed.
