Protocol summary

Study aim
To evaluate the effects of 8-week use of Naturagen® 4 Joint product containing type I, II and III collagen on pain, quality of life, balance scales and functional test results in meniscopathy patients
Design
This study was designed as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. 32 male and female subjects aged 35-65 years with meniscopathy participated in the study. Various scales and tests were administered as a pre-test and then subjects were randomized into two groups. After 8 weeks of product use, post-tests were performed. After the tests, within-group and between-group comparisons were made and the effects of the product were analyzed.
Settings and conduct
All measurements in the study were performed in the same performance laboratory. Blinding of the products was done using blinding codes on sealed envelopes. Participants and the researchers responsible for data collection were blinded to treatment allocation.
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion: Diagnosis of unilateral or bilateral grade 1 or 2 meniscal tear for more than 3 months, No history of any serious acute trauma to the knee, No X-ray or MRI evidence of osteoarthritis, Non-vegetarian. Exclusion: Any history of trauma, fracture or surgery on the index joint, Knee surgery within the last 12 months or planned surgery within the working period, Intra-articular injections within the last 6 months, Intolerance to protein-based foods or supplements, pregnant or breastfeeding, and alcohol dependence.
Intervention groups
32 male and female subjects aged 35-65 years with meniscopathy participated in the study. After completion of pre-tests, participants were randomized to one of two treatment groups using computer-approved software and divided into collagen (n=17) and placebo (n=15) groups.
Main outcome variables
Pain, quality of life and balance scale scores and various functional test results.

Randomization (investigator's opinion)
Randomized
Randomization description
After completion of the pre-tests, all participants were assigned a number (1-32). These numbers were randomized into two groups in a 1:1 ratio by means of "Integer Set Generator" in computer-approved software (www.random.org). Participants were divided into groups according to the number groups. After randomization, participants were divided into collagen (n=17) and placebo (n=15) groups.
Blinding (investigator's opinion)
Double blinded
Blinding description
Blinding of the products was done using blinding codes in sealed envelopes. Participants selected their products through these envelopes and both participants and the researchers responsible for data collection were blinded to which medication was used throughout the study. Only the researcher who conducted the data analysis at the end of the study had a list of which medicines the codes on the envelopes belonged to, and this researcher used this list to conduct between-group analyses.
